Summer is definitely here! Today it was 94 and it is only June 5th!! Not only is it hot outside but there are some hot SCCA topics to report.
Our new website - AtlantaSCCA.org is up and running and I hope you have seen it and surfed around. I am still learning my way around the site, but am very impressed with what I see. Thank You again to all the people who have worked many hours to make it happen and continue to keep it updated.
I will start out by reporting on region activity and what I have been doing. I had the privileged opportunity to participate in a Jumbo Region Conference call on May 7,2008. It was decided at the National Convention in San Antonio that we would try to have these calls, as deemed necessary, with this being the first.
SCCA President Jim Julow moderated the call and I have to complement him on his ability to keep us on time and task. I am more than happy to provide the minutes of that meeting to anyone who would care to see them. The highlights of that call were:
- We discussed the format for future conventions to make it more relevant for the Jumbo regions.
- We discussed how (if) other regions were handling marketing in this competitive environment.
- Colan Arnold provided us an overview of membership: We’re up 1000 members over last April!
- We discussed worker incentive programs in the Jumbo Regions.
- Jim Julow reported the possible approval at the BoD meeting of allowing NASA competition licenses for SCCA (I can now report this was approved).
- We also discussed the economic impact on the club, insurance costs and other topics.
As for Atlanta Region news - Solo is well into its year and doing very well. Make sure to check the Solo area on our Region website & see what they have going on. Club Racing has had a slow star. Entry numbers are down a bit.
We’re looking forward to a great July 19-20 weekend that features our annual fundraiser event for Susan G Komen Foundation. This is the “All Girls Turn” weekend and the “Other Girls” who show up to solicit donations for the Susan Komen Foundation. The “girl” who’s the biggest fundraiser will be crowned “King of the All Girl Turn on Sunday morning. So, will Fletcher Williams be de-throned this year? And then rumor has it a wedding will take place Saturday night.
Don’t miss this big weekend! Speaking of Saturday night, we’ll have a cookout & everyone attending is invited. I’ll also give a club update at the party that evening. All members are invited but you need to RSVP by email to Gwen or myself by July 14th if you are plan on coming up for the cookout only. Please check the race schedule for registration hours, as you will have to go through registration at track to be admitted into Road Atlanta.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Tere Pulliam
